A Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa, 1981
From the Book Cover
A completely revised edition of the standard Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa with descriptions of an additional 500 species and 48 new colour plates.
The Region. The area covered by this book consists of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The information given is relevant beyond political boundaries and distributions of all species are given for the entire African continent.
The Birds. Over 650 species are described and illustrated, providing a comprehensive coverage of the East African avifauna. There are notes on field identification for a further 633 species under the heading 'allied species'.
The Text gives details of plumage, size, voice, flight, habitat and distribution. The author, John Williams, is the world's best known authority on African wildlife and was for many years curator of birds at the Coryndon Museum in Nairobi.
The Plates, in full colour, have been repainted for this edition and depict all the main species described in the text. The illustrator, Norman Arlott, is a young British artist who has accompanied the author on numerous field trips in East Africa and who was recently awarded the title of 'Bird Illustrator of the Year' in the United Kingdom.
My Summary
I used this book while in the Peace Corps in Tanzania, East Africa. Very useful, although it is impossible to include all species in one field guide due to the sheer variety present in East Africa.
